Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla ‘Eva’

Description: Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla ‘Eva is a hardy, deciduous shrub with finely cut, dark burgundy, almost black leaves that turn to vibrant red in autumn. Pretty clusters of tiny pink, scented flowers form at the start of summer, followed by very deep red elderberries.

History: Raised at Horticultural Research International, East Malling, Kent. Received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

Sambucus (Elder) Growing Tips: Grow in moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soils, also thrives on extremely chalky sites. Tolerates shade, but colours best in sun. Fruit and flowers may be used for flavouring, wine and cooking.
